What is Smart Lipo?

Smart Lipo is a form of liposuction that uses a laser to assist in the removal of unwanted body fat. SmartLipo utilizes a small instrument and specialized technology to melt fat cells while contouring and reshaping areas of the body including the abdomen, love handles, backs, thighs, hips, knees, arms, neck, and chin.

Although SmartLipo is highly effective, it is only appropriate for patients who are not excessively overweight

How does SmartLipo work?

A laser that targets fat cells dissolves the cells on contact. A gentle suction then removes the dissolved fat. A very small percentage is retained, then absorbed into the body, and eliminated from the body through natural processes within a day.

What happens during the procedure?

Dr. Stacy will begin by filling the area to be treated with a saline solution (also known as the tumescent technique). This solution helps numb the site and shrink blood vessels. The SmartLipo laser is inserted into the skin and heats the fat cells, resulting in a release of liquified fat. A small incision is made in the area and small cannulas (tiny tubes) are inserted to suck out the dissolved fat cells.

Why should I choose SmartLipo over traditional liposuction?

Traditional liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia and loose skin is often left behind where fat has been removed. Because removal requires a 4-to 6-mm cannula, traditional liposuction can result in extensive tissue trauma and/or scarring where the cannula enters the body. Stitches are often required and a week or more of downtime is necessary for recovery. Cost is typically $6000 and up.

With SmartLipo, treatment is always performed under local anesthesia. The laser contributes to skin tightening during the procedure and stimulates further collagen production, which gradually becomes visible over three to six months. The cannula is a tiny 1-mm tube, resulting in little trauma and almost no scarring. No stitches are needed and downtime is minimal.
